This layered tortilla hack has been going viral on TikTok, as it’s such an easy way to make a delicious lunch with any number of different fillings. Here’s my version (plus 10 alternative filling ideas!).

If you’ve been on TikTok lately, you might have seen this layered tortilla hack going viral, with the hashtag #tortillatrend. Although I’m not an avid TikTok fan, I do browse it occasionally (gotta stay down with the kids, you know…), and I’ve seen loads of these creatively folded wraps, with all different kinds of fillings!

I’m never one to miss out on a good bandwagon, so here’s my attempt at the TikTok layered tortilla wrap hack.

If you have no idea what I’m talking about, congratulations, you’re probably old enough to buy alcohol. Here’s the general idea:

As you can see, these layered tortillas basically have 4 different sections, each with a different filling, folded up on top of each other, and grilled or fried until they’re nice and hot and crispy.

They’re super straightforward to make once you get the hang of the folding! Just start in one corner, and fold around in a circle until you have a beautiful little pocket.

Here’s how to make them – read on if you’d like lots of ideas for different fillings!

How to make layered tortilla wraps

Step 1: Make a cut

Start by taking a large tortilla, and making a cut from the centre outwards. It doesn’t need to be perfectly centred (no need to get your ruler out), just do the best you can.

I used a wholemeal tortilla, because that’s what I had on hand. Honestly, white ones are nicer.

Step 2: Add fillings in all 4 corners

Point the cut you’ve just made towards you, then add your choice of fillings in all four quadrants of the tortilla.

You can add whatever fillings you like, really. I’ve included heaps of ideas below, but here’s what I used this time:

  1. Fresh watercress
  2. Red pepper hummus, and a couple of sliced (pre-cooked) veggie nuggets (I used the Quorn Southern Fried Bites)
  3. Sweet chilli sauce and cherry tomatoes
  4. 2 slices of gouda cheese

If you’re going to add cheese to your tortilla, I find it’s best to place it where I did, in Corner 4, as this way it helps to ‘glue’ the tortilla together as it melts. Put anything a bit more bulky (like the nuggets) in Corners 1 or 2, as these will end up right in the middle of your wrap once it’s been folded up.

Step 3: Fold it up

Fold Corner 1 up over Corner 2, then flip it across over Corner 3, and finally down over Corner 4.

I suppose you could just eat it like this if you like, but the next stage is where the magic happens…

Step 4: Grill or fry

Pop your folded wrap in a sandwich grill / panini press – or, if you don’t have one, just use a frying pan.

Cook it until the tortilla is golden brown and crispy. If you’re using a sandwich grill, you should get those super satisfying grill lines across the top. Inside, all your chosen fillings will be hot, gooey, crispy, or whatever other delicious adjectives you can think of, depending on what fillings you chose.

And that’s all there is to it! Obviously putting stuff in a tortilla isn’t a groundbreaking idea, but I’ve been enjoying thinking of various different ways to fill the four quadrants, and folding it up in this way feels novel enough to be fun!

What can I use to cook the layered tortilla?

I use a panini press to make my layered tortillas. It gets both sides crispy at the same time, and gives beautiful grill lines.

I can’t find the exact one I have online (it’s old), but these are a similar style (Amazon UK* / Amazon US*). I love the interchangeable plates, as they can also be used for waffles, toasties, paninis, and lots of other stuff.


What if I don’t have a panini press?

If you don’t have a panini press, you can cook these layered tortillas in a frying pan instead. Just cook for a few minutes on each side, over a medium heat. If you like, you can press them down with a spatula, or with something heavy (like the bottom of a big saucepan), if you want them to have the ‘pressed’ effect.

Do I need to use oil or butter?

Not if you don’t want to. When I make a regular quesadilla, I never use butter. The tortillas should crisp up just fine without it, and don’t usually stick unless the filling spills out (which isn’t hard to clear up).

This time, I did actually put a tiny bit of butter on both sides of the folded tortilla before I put it in the panini press, just to make sure it got extra golden brown and crispy for the photos. But you don’t really need to bother unless you want to!

Can I make a vegan layered tortilla?

Absolutely! However, I do find the cheese really useful for sealing the whole thing closed.

So you can either use vegan cheese (if you have a favourite one that melts nicely), or just accept that your end result may be ever so slightly messier than my version. I’m definitely not averse to a bit of mess though!

Other sauces and spreads could be good for sealing the thing shut, too (I’m thinking hummus peanut butter could work well?), but so far I’ve only tried cheese.

Other filling ideas for your layered folded tortillas

As I said, the most fun part of making these layered tortillas is deciding what fillings to add! There’s no limit to what you could include – just obviously make sure that the 4 things you choose will go well together.

I’ve made a few of these now, and as long as you choose fillings that go together, it always works out well.

Here are a few ideas.

The ham sandwich one

  1. 2 slices of vegetarian ham (I like the Quorn one)
  2. A small handful of fresh rocket (arugula) or watercress
  3. Sliced fresh tomato
  4. 2 slices of cheese

The cheeseburger one

  1. Sliced pickled gherkins, mustard and ketchup
  2. A sliced (pre-cooked) veggie burger
  3. Sliced tomatoes and lettuce
  4. 2 slices of cheese

The dessert one

  1. Chocolate (or chocolate-hazelnut) spread
  2. Sliced bananas
  3. Sliced strawberries
  4. Peanut butter

The breakfast one

  1. Mashed avocado
  2. Fried egg
  3. Sliced tomatoes
  4. 2 slices of cheese

The Tex-Mex one

  1. Sautéed peppers and onions
  2. Spicy refried beans
  3. Sliced tomatoes and lettuce
  4. 2 slices of cheese

The pizza one

  1. Tomato pizza sauce
  2. Your favourite pizza toppings (e.g. mushrooms, peppers, etc.)
  3. More of your favourite pizza toppings
  4. 2 slices of cheese

The falafel one

  1. Sliced tomatoes and a couple of pieces of falafel
  2. Grilled halloumi or crumbled feta cheese
  3. Black olives and rocket (arugula) or watercress
  4. 1 slice of cheese

The BLT one

  1. Sliced tomatoes
  2. Vegetarian bacon (pre-cooked)
  3. Lettuce
  4. Ketchup and mustard

The s’mores one

  1. Chocolate (or chocolate-hazelnut) spread
  2. A couple of big vegetarian marshmallows
  3. A crumbled graham cracker or Digestive biscuit
  4. More chocolate spread

The spinach and ricotta one

  1. Ricotta cheese
  2. Fresh or sautéed spinach
  3. Sautéed onions and garlic
  4. 2 slices of cheese

Phew! There’s got to be something there to inspire you. Really, you can just have a dig through your fridge, and see what nice combinations you can come up with. No rules!

Cook Time: 10 mins

Total Time: 15 mins

Servings: 1 person

  • 1 large tortilla wrap (I used wholemeal)
  • Small handful fresh watercress
  • 2 tsp hummus
  • 2-3 pre-cooked vegetarian nuggets
  • 1 tsp sweet chilli sauce
  • 3 cherry tomatoes, halved
  • 2 slices gouda cheese
  • Lay the wrap flat on a board, and cut a slit from the centre of the wrap towards you, to the edge of the wrap.

  • Place the watercress in the bottom left corner of the wrap, to the left of the cut you’ve just made. Above it, add the hummus and nuggets. In the top-right corner, add the chilli sauce and cherry tomatoes. And to the right of the cut, add the sliced cheese.

  • Fold the bottom left of the tortilla upwards, then continue folding to the right, and finally fold downwards over the sliced cheese. See the blog post for photos of the whole process, if needed.

  • Cook the folded wrap in a panini press until golden brown and crispy. Alternatively, if you don’t have a panini press, just cook it in a dry frying pan for a few minutes each side. If you like, you can push the wrap down with a spatula or a heavy object (like the bottom of a heavy pan) to help press it together.

These are the fillings I chose to use in my layered tortilla, but of course you can use whatever fillings you like – there are loads of ideas in the blog post.
